Green Flash Double Stout Black Ale: Review

The Stout

Green Flash Double Stout Black Ale

Green Flash Brewing Company
San Diego, California, USA
8.8% abv

Appearance: beautiful black body with a toasty tan 2-1/2 finger head that leaves tons of lacing on the glass.

Aroma: toasted grains, little hint of coffee, and a touch of hoppy spice

Flavors: dark roasted coffee with a nice acidic bite, dry 90% dark chocolate like bitterness, nice herbal/grass hops, toasted and lightly burnt grains, some alcohol peppery feel on the finish,

Mouthfeel: solid bitter style, scratchy wool like feel, low carbonation, almost syrupy so, let’s call it oily, lingering sharp bitter bite on the palate, full body

To the Point: this is not for the faint of heart, if you like stouts that are big and bold this is for you and this one is for me, I don’t like that thin dark ale like stout

The Cigar

CAO Brazilia Amazon
This is a big 6 x 60 stick.  This cigar is meant to be consumed with a quality Stout or a robust Porter.  The flavors profile is fairly simple; dark roast coffee with a nice touch of chocolate, toasted tobacco leafs and a dash of pepper mill mix.

This is a very good full bodied pairing.  The hoppy bitter style of the Double Stout blends well with the white and green peppercorn notes of the cigar.  I thought it might be too much but it is just right for my palate.  The dark roasted acidic coffee and dark chocolate like bitterness of the Stout really picks up the rich coffee like note in the cigar.

This pairing is not for the novice.  Only real Stout lovers and experienced cigar smokers need to apply.
