Pugsley’s Signature Series Barley Wine: Review

8.5% abv
1 pint 6 oz bottle
Shipyard Brewing Co.
Portland, Maine, USA

The bottle covers it best. “This is a big beer made with six different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Caramunich, Wheat, Chocolate and Roasted Barley) and balanced with a very full hop charge of Summit, Challenger and Fuggles hops.”

This barley wine pours a deep brown color on the body and a tan head that dissipates quickly. The nose has a nice fruity aroma. In the taste I do not get that fruity aroma. The roasted notes are there on the taste buds. There is also a raisin like quality along with some grains play along. Not a big chocolate presence, I wish there was more. There is a good smoky quality to the brew. The hops throw in a bit of bitterness to balance things out. The flavors all seem to muddle together for an average tasting ale. To me the roasted barley and a hoppy bite seem to be the main players and then there is a sweet malty taste that appears now and then.
