In- Heat Wheat: Review

The Beer

In-Heat Wheat Hefe Weizen
4.7% abv
12 oz bottle
IBU 12
Flying Dog Brewery
Frederick, Maryland, USA
My Strength Rating: 4

Ok, there is something going on with this 6 pack of beer. They must have juiced this beer up with extra carbonation. Every beer that I have opened up just wants to explode and then you cannot pour a good beer, it is all foam. The cloud of foam that is in the glass looks like the pastry chef toasted the top. I have never had this beer do this before in past years.

The aroma has a soapy smell with some wheat in the background. The taste has some lemon citrus zip, wheat, and some spice. The watery edge is a little big for this beer and of course the carbonation is out of control. Once I got a chance to put all the beer from the bottle in the glass the color is a ruddy orange color. There must be something wrong with this six pack of beer – bottom of the barrel stuff maybe. But, the taste is pretty much the same.

I usually pick up a six pack or two every summer because it goes well with a cigar with its watery edge. This beer does not have the character of a hefe weizen but, it is serviceable on a hot day.

Buy: If you are looking for a Hefe Weizen, skip this beer. If you want an ok wheat beer to go with a cigar or with food knock yourself out and get a six pack. There are too many good Hefes out there to bother with this one.

I have not had this beer in a couple of years. This Belgian Style Wheat Ale has a nice looking hazy/cloudy golden color and a nice white head. There is some good sediment floating around thi the glass showing off that yeast was added to the bottle just before they cap it. Nice spice and slight coriander taste. Nothing too strong. Good wheat and bready yeast flavors. Not the best Belgian style wheat ale on the market but, it is a very refreshing ale on this blazing hot day and the flavors are nice.

Try it – Worthy of a purchase. A good introductory beer to wheat styles.

This Belgain Blond has a beautiful semi cloudy golden body with some solid lacing on the glass and an excellent soft white head. Slightly fuller bodied Belgian Blond. Nice hops in the mix to bring a nice bitterness to the game and some nice flavorful fruitiness. There is a little alcohol warmth and tingle to the palate.

Whitsun Ale: Review

Arcadia Brewing

Arcadia makes sum really nice beers and this is another example. The color looks like a bronze and the off white head seemed thin. After the first sip I could tell that the carbonation is low and the lacing on the glass non-existing to very thin. The mouthful of wheat sure does the trick. A slight level of spice and orange peel rounds off the taste.

Seems like a nice little roasted malt character to make things interesting. There is a caramel malt taste along with an herbal spice and a mineral like undertone. I am not noticing much coriander. I do like the overall sweet profile. Remember it has a 17 IBU rating. Don’t worry there are enough hops to keep things in check.

I found this ale interesting overall. I would like to try it again.

Buy: Yes – It’s summertime get to the store now.

Big Sky IPA

6.2%
12 oz bottle
65 IBU
Big Sky Brewing
Missoula, Montana
The nose is fresh pine. If you close your eyes and smell you will think you are in the woods with a bunch of evergreens around you. The taste of coarse is pine with some citrus. There is a little malty action to keep things in line. This would be a great Christmas Holiday Beer.

At 65 IBU it is not a big IPA bomb. If you are the grapefruit bomb queen or king this is not it for you. I don’t get any big grapefruit notes. Like I said, ‘some citrus.’

Actually, the aftertaste and mouthfeel of this ale is tolerable. It could be described as ‘clean’. At least to me there is no big aftertaste that will ruin your taste buds for the day.

This IPA is drinkable and tolerable to me so that means you IPA American hop heads will dislike it.

I am going to remember to pick this up in November or December.

Buy: Yes, In the winter months.

Ghettoblaster: Review

The Beer
Ghettoblaster by: Motor City Brewing Works
This English style mild ale has a very low abv at 4.2%. This ale pours a light translucent amber color with a thin head. There is no lacing left on the glass while drinking this ale. The nose came across as malty and grainy with a slight roasty note underneath when first poured. After that it is rather plain on the nose with each sip.

There seems to be a roasty malt and a slight bitter pecan shell like taste. The bottle reads, ‘…clean biscuit-like maltiness, and wine like fruitiness.’ Wine like? Really. No cherry or dark cherry; blackberry or blueberry; red or black currant; what fruit? It is Ghettoblaster so they must be referring to Boones Farm type wine.  If my wine tasted like this I would not drink wine. I can buy the “clean biscuit-like maltiness.” I could understand maybe a date or dark dry raisin like fruit.

This ale has a big watery edge. It is a mild ale so, there would be a solid watery profile. There are moments when I think it has a little English Ale like quality, then it is gone and I am left thinking ‘what is that taste.’
The watery edge of the ale should make it work with a cigar.

Black Wattle Superior: Review

My Strength Rating: 4
Could not find a freshness date on the bottle until I bought it, poured it, was drinking it, and then held the bottle up to the light and then found it – 7 – 21 -08. 08!!! Yes this is 2010! But, it tastes good. Tastes better than some beers with fresh ‘born on dates.’

Also, on the bottle it says, “…infusion of Australian wattle seed.” And, “…balance of flavour and complexity, richness in colour with a lasting creamy head.”

It is said that wattle seed has a chocolate, coffee, hazelnut flavor profile.

Let’s start with the head. A very aggressive pour to get an almost 2 finger head. Then, I turned to put something away in the kitchen drawer and then there was no head. While drinking the beer there was no lacing on the glass either. The color was a cloudy reddish-amber. The nose a little roasty malt character.

The taste followed with a little caramel malts and roasted barely flavors. And, don’t overlook the wheat flavor. I’m busy trying to figure out what a ‘wattle seed’ tastes like and I am ready to overlook the wheat flavor. There does seem to be a slight complexity to the taste. I do not get any chocolate or coffee notes. There is a slight nutty – I could be talked into hazelnut. Needs some hoppy flavors.

The beer does have a watery edge which helps to leave a short finish. Actually, the aftertaste is pretty clean or uneventful – depending how you want to look at it. I might buy it again if I find a fresh bottle.

Buy one bottle to try it. That is better than what I would say for a Bud Light!

Shiner Frost Ale: Review

The Ale
Shiner Frost Dortmunder Style Ale
5.5% abv
12 oz bottle
Spoetzl Brewery
Shiner, Texas, USA
My Strength Rating: 4.5
A strong golden body to this ale. Descent head and not much on the lacing of the glass. The malt profile is pretty simple. There is the sweetness (malts doing their job) and a slight roasted quality along with a meaty walnut like taste. The hops are fresh and are there just to keep the malts in check.

Nothing too outstanding here. Nothing bad about it either. It just seems average. There is a lingering dryness on the tongue for the aftertaste.

On the bottle they claim that it is a ‘hearty full-bodied ale.’ I give it a 4.5 on my strength scale which is medium bodied. The only reason I gave the .5 was because of the lingering dryness on the aftertaste. I would call it a hearty medium bodied ale.

This is a seasonal beer, winter. It was the lone six pack on the shelf (here in the month of July) and of course I have to pick it up anyways because I need the bottle cap and it gives me a beer to review. The name Frost sounded refreshing with this heat wave as well. I never had the beer before and I might not have it again. I might try it when it is in season – might.

Pours a wonderful soft yellow cloud of wheat with a white pillow of foam on the top. They say that they use 40% wheat in the brewing process and that helps to deliver that cloudy yellow glow in my glass.

The coriander and orange profile is soft and pleasing. This is truly delicious. This is not one of those ‘Belgian White’ beer want to bees that overdose the brew with coriander, spice and citrus. This is an elegant tasting witbier.

An elegant ale deserves an elegant cigar.

Diamond Crown Cigar

For your finer moments in life this is it! A wonderful walnut and soft pepper profile makes this an elegant cigar for that special moment. These two elegant beauties get along just fine. They play off each other well and the cigar brings out the spices a bit in the ale.

Two Hearted Ale and a Square to Round Burger

Ok, I had to be a problem child in school. I was the one who wanted to get that round peg in the square hole. You knew it did not go there but, it would be really cool if ‘you’ could be the one to make it work. So, today I am proving I did not learn a thing in school. I am going to put the round patty inside the square bun and I am going to enjoy every bite and laugh on the inside at all those teachers who say, “You cannot put the round peg in the square hole.”

I picked up a cheddar bacon burger from Walt’s Meat Market and a packet of the square rolls.

After grilling the burger

I am going to top the burger off with Tastefully Simple Smoky Bacon Sauce.

Then, I’ll add a big slice of grilled onion, grilled tomato, and some fresh lettuce.

Oh, that is one wonderful burger. So, tasty! So, simple!  And, the square bun was perfect with the round burger.

No sissy watery yellow beer for this burger, a big glass of Two Hearted Ale will have to do. This hearty ale was a perfect companion to this flavorful burger.

Affligem Blond Ale: Review

The Ale
Affligem Blond Ale
6.8% abv.
11.2oz. bottle.
From: Belgium
Affligem is the oldest abbey in Flanders, Belgium.

Nice looking golden color with a fluffy head and some lacing on the glass. Nice summertime tropical like fruits dipped in honey. There is a good grainy and herbal taste with a little peppery spice to give the ale some character. This is no foo foo blond, this blond has it going on. You will want to experience the firm body of flavors this blond has to offer. I am going to give this a 5.5 on my strength scale. I could even go to 6 on the scale.

As you sip this ale think of what you like best.
Is it the honey and fruits?
Is it the grainy and little peppery taste?
Is it the herbal and slight bitter bite?
Then the carbonation seems to swirl them all together.

Gran Habano – Habano #3 Imperial and Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold Lager

The Cigar
Habano #3 Imperial
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano
Binder: Jalapa-Habano
Filler: Nic., Costa Rica, Mexico
Size: 6 x 60
My Strength Rating: 5.5
I like these bigger ring gauge sizes in this line up better than their smaller sticks. The smoke is still smooth but, there is more flavor to this size I believe. There is a good hardwood wood and earthy profile along with some good spice dancing on my palate. I think it is like a white pepper note in that spice profile. Not, strong enough to be black pepper. The white pepper will keep this cigar in that medium bodied range. A slight bitterness to the taste and a dry coffee bean like quality helps to build a little complexity for this cigar. This cigar should go well with a lot of beers. But, I remember one time in the spring when I tried it with a bold IPA and that did not work at all. The IPA brought out the bitterness in this cigar and the cigar made the IPA bitterer.

The Beer

Great Lakes Brewing

My Strength Rating: 4 I was expecting to give it a 2 or 3.

Poured a deep golden color and most lagers will have that light bright golden color, almost straw like or a pale gold. The head color is a little off white, to use a painting term, ‘eggshell.’ Solid lacing on the glass after each sip.

This might not be that boring lager story here. This lager is not void of taste. I think for a lager it has a good hearty and earthy profile. A lot of lagers will have water and sugar as their profile story. Of course the malts are up front (30 IBU). But, it is not a 20 IBU that is all sweet like sugar water (Miller Drinkers take notes here). This Lager has a little hoppy action going on. A slight citrus bite of hops hits the back of the palate with each sip. I get the feel of a little spice to the profile here, maybe coming from the alcohol and the hops. Oh, I am sorry Miller drinkers, I probably lost you. We were talking about flavor.

Now, I find it interesting or ironic that they give it a German name and then turn around and write on the bottle, ‘Not … as malty as a Munich-style lager… .’ Good! Because, I don’t like that metallic taste in my beer. This lager does have a crisp feel to each sip but, it is not clean. Clean usually means there is no specific taste. This lager does have some taste.

Toss those boring lagers overboard and serve yourself up a flavorful lager – Dortmunder Gold by, Great Lakes Brewing.
See BeerPostings2

The Pairing
I had planned to smoke a milder cigar till I did the review on this beer. Now, a lager or a pilsner you can go stronger and bolder with your cigar because there are usually no specific flavors to compete with. Another good reason is that the lighter and watery style lager and pilsner will also refresh your palate while you are smoking that stronger cigar.

The reason I wanted to pair these two up is that there is a good herbal spice profile, that citrus bite on the back of the palate and that good earthy malty and just good overall hearty taste for a lager, how will it taste with a flavorful cigar.

This cigar helps to kick up that spice profile in the lager. The earthiness of each makes for a solid mouthfeel that I would never expect while drinking a lager and smoking a cigar. I really like these two together.

I recommend this pairing

Burger & Sauce Pairing

The three different sauces: Bayou Bourbon Glaze by Tastefully Simple; Michigan Cherry Barbecue Sauce by Sansonetti; Smoky Bacon Grill Sauce by Tastefully Simple.

The Three different burgers from Walt’s Meats in Port Austin, Michigan. Blue Cheese Burger; Smoked Gouda and Mushroom; Cheddar and Bacon Burger. If you are ever in the Thumb of Michigan you have to get these burgers from Walt’s – they are the best – I always buy enough to take back home to Dearborn, Michigan.

I am going to cook the three different burger up on the grill and then cut a 1/6 section out of each burger to top with a sauce. No other fixins will be on the burgers.

Then, I will select which sauce is best with which burger.

My pregame selection
Blue Cheese burger will match with the Cherry Bbq
Smoked Gouda and Mushroom will match with Smoky Bacon Grill Sauce
Cheddar and Bacon - dah – Smoky Bacon Grill Sauce

Smoked Gouda and Mushroom Burger
1st choice: With the Smoky Sauce – very tasty – would work best with a slice of yellow onion.
2nd choice: Bayou Glaze – very good – would work depending on the veggies – have to be a sweet onion
3rd: Cherry Bbq – pretty good – didn’t bring out the flavors of the mush and gouda

Blue Burger
1st choice: Cherry Bbq – very good
2nd choice: Bayou Glaze – very good
3rd: Smoky Sauce – not bad – I’d pass

Cheddar and Bacon Burger
Toss up – I like all three – with this burger

Trout Slayer Ale: Review

5% abv
12oz bottle
Big Sky Brewing Co.
Bigskybrew.com

Pours a light golden color with a white foamy head. Not much on the lacing while drinking. Solid carbonation making for a refreshing ale. Seems to have good balance between the hops and malts, not too sweet and well of coarse not too much on the hops. So, let’s say the hops are just keeping the malts in check.

While drinking this I am wondering what kind of ale this is, it has a strange taste, grainy and/or wheat flavor. When looking at the beer I am thinking lager and when I drink the beer I am not thinking ale. So, I’ll say it has a grainy-wheat taste and touch of biscuit and the water profile has a mineral water character. I’ll give it an ok to good. Now, I am going to the Big Sky web site to see what this beer is all about.

OH, it says it is a filtered wheat ale. Now that makes since. Brewed with some mellow hops; Palisade, Glacier, and Mt. Hood hops. Interesting on the web site it says, ‘4.7%’ abv and on the bottle 5%.

Buy: I would not go out of my way to find it. If you do see it, it is worth a try.

Wittekerke Belgian Wheat: Review

The Beer
Wittekerke stands for White Church. See Johnny Fincioen video on Global Beer Network on the history of Wittekerke. To me this 5% abv Belgian Wheat Beer should be a wheat beer lovers dream. I love the fresh wheat style taste and the mild lemon citrus squeeze. Very refreshing on a hot summer day. My strength rating for this beer is a 4. No coriander or other spices to jam up that mouthfeel. Don’t get me wrong, I do like those beers that have that Belgian white style, but not on a 90 degree day. After this one has been in the sun, while in my glass, it still tastes good. To me cooked coriander and spices is not so refreshing in this situation. For my summer time pleasure I am buying a 12 pack of Wittekerke for that Belgian Wheat refreshing taste.

Best served at 55 degrees, so they say on the packaging and this is true for porters and stouts. This Porter has a nice dark body with some deep ruby edges and a thin tan head. A simple roasted malt nose but, the taste has a little complexity going on here. Nice creamy mouthfeel at times with some lingering roasted notes left of the palate. There is a solid dark chocolate taste here and it is of the 80% dark chocolate type – little dry and a nice bitterness to it. The roasted malts and the roasted coffee profile will satisfy this coffee lover. How about you?

I enjoy this porter in the late fall and winter months. This is a first for me to have it in the summertime. I think this is a pretty solid choice for a porter lover. What do you think?

They call the color ‘deep amber’ I call it dark copper like a used penny. To me this is a very refreshing amber lager. Has a nice malty sweetness in the background and a good roasted malt character on the taste. There is a nice bitter quality letting you know that the hops are in the game (unlike LaBron, the hops are here to play). A little creamy style to the texture. The right carbonation level for a refreshing finish. I am looking forward to drinking the other two bottles for I have not had the Ness Lager before. I’ll admit I am not an amber ale fan but, this amber lager is very good from what I can tell from this first time experience.

A bright copper color, like a new penny. A good crisp citrus and spice profile that is front and center. Nothing overpower though. Nice malty character underneath to help strike that balance between malts and hops. To me this is a very enjoyable pale ale. Like the Eliot Ness I have not had this before so I am looking forward to the next two bottles from this sampler pack.

I have to admit it – I am really liking the Great Lakes line up. I just hope they don’t move the brewery to Miami!

I really don’t see this as a great sampler pack to pick up in the summertime. I would recommend this sampler in the fall and winter.  Is it a 'great' sampler pack.  From what I know about two of the brews they are top notch.  Let's see

Another beer that is expired – dated 28 Nov. 08. Now, I am going to be checking really close on those beers they sell by this bottle at that party store.
You know what? It is still good. Usually a lager won’t make it that long.
Typical golden lager color with a white head. Typical lager taste; crisp and clean. Once again, better than some ‘fresh’ beers.

Buy: if you like lagers that have the taste profile of ‘crisp and clean’ go for it. So, it is better than Bud and Miller. But, not by much.

Brocatus Torpedo Cigar and Bieken Honey Ale: Review

The Cigar
Wrapper: Connecticut-seed Ecuadorian
Filler: Dominican
Size: 6.5 x 52
My Strength Rating: 3.5
There is nothing complex about this cigar but, it is a tasty woody flavored cigar. This cigar is on the mild side and is perfect for a summer day. The cigar is never harsh and is always satisfying. There is nice pecan like nutty note that mingle well with a smooth oak wood like character. If you are looking for a great value cigar – this is it. I am getting low on the box that I bought and I am planning to buy a couple of boxes next time.

The Ale
The Bieken is an 8.5% abv Belgian beer with a nice mild-medium body flavor. This ale is well balanced. There is nothing overwhelming from this ale. Yes, it is on the sweet side of the scale but, it is a very tasty sweet. The summertime fruits have that honey dipped flavor and if you want to enjoy a quality ale on a hot day this is it.

The Pairing
This is a very tasty pairing on this wonderful summer day. The nutty, woody character of the cigar pairs well with the sweet fruits of the Bieken Ale. I would definitely pair these up again on a hot summer day.

Bavik Premium Pils

This beer should matchup with many fine cigars. As it says on globalbeer.com, “…there’s not much of a specific taste to offend the food you eat with it.”

So, I believe you can select your fuller bodied smoke and the Bavik will help refresh the palate. You can go with your medium or milder cigar and you will still be satisfied.

There is a light malty sweetness that greets the tongue and then a delicate spicy-herbal hoppy profile that takes over. The fine carbonation adds softness to the mouthfeel that will refresh your smoking experience.

This is an exceptional choice for those summertime yard games, such as horseshoes. When I head over to the horseshoe pit I have my Bavik in hand and a medium bodied cigar to boot. No matter how I look at it, Bavik Pils is a sure ringer.

Stone Ruination IPA: Review

7.7% abv. It is in a one pint 6oz bottle. $7.00 for a bottle.

As I have always said about IPA bombs – Why would you want to drink something that ruins your taste buds for the day? Food does not taste the same and if you change to drink something else – forget it.

Stone Ruination proves my point. It is written on the bottle. “So called because of the immediate ruinous effect on your palate. The moment after the first swallow, all other foods and drink items suddenly become substantially more bland than they were just seconds before.”

When I have smoked some of my fuller bodied cigars with other IPA’s the IPA just made the bold flavorful cigar a nasty bitter tasting lump of coal. And, the bitterness of the IPA went through the roof as well during those pairings.

Don’t get me wrong, I “like” a good IPA. I am not a hop head. I don’t mind having one now and then at the end of the day. When I know I will not eat anything else.

The Notes
You know you are going to get a grapefruit bomb here – it says on the bottle 100+ IBU. The IBU numbers, you see on some beer bottles or the company’s website or their menu boards at the breweries, stand for International Bitterness Units.

Wow, not the huge bomb I thought it was going to be. The grapefruit-citrusy hops are at work though. Along with those pine notes that drag across your tongue like a pile of pine needles. As this ale warms up there is a nice floral hoppiness that mingles, ever so slightly, with the strong citrus style. To me there seems to be a cedary woody note left on the palate. Cedar! – I think I might try a cigar with this one. The Casa Magna may be a good choice.

Overall I have to say I liked this one. I do plan to buy another bottle to do that cigar pairing. This ale did not ruin my taste buds overall. Oh, it did have a solid pucker power and left that woody-citrusy after taste. Other IPA bombs left me thinking, ‘why would I ever drink that again?’ After this one my thought was, ‘I would like to try that again.’ And, YES at the end of the day.
